Designing Master Key Systems: How Access Hierarchy Actually Works
A master key system is built on a concept called a 'change key' — the lowest-level key that opens exactly one lock in the system. Above it sits the master key, which opens every lock in a defined group (say, all offices in one building wing). Grand master and great-grand master keys extend that hierarchy further for large facilities. The magic happens inside the lock cylinder: each pin stack contains an additional 'master wafer' cut at a specific depth that allows two different key cuts to lift the pins to the shear line. Mortise lock cylinders — the rectangular, cartridge-style locks recessed into the edge of commercial doors — are the gold standard for this application because their interchangeable cores accept precise re-pinning without replacing the entire lock body.
